How to Report an Auto Insurance Claim

What to do if you have an auto accident:

1. Do not leave the scene of the accident.
   • Call the police immediately to report any automobile accident that results in personal injury or vehicle damage. Even if the damage was minor, always call.
   • Notify the police about any medical assistance that may be needed or any vehicle that is not drivable.
   • Warn other vehicles by turning on your vehicle’s flashers.
   • Do not accept responsibility or otherwise discuss the car accident with anyone except police authorities and your auto insurance company.
   • Do not accept any monetary settlement at the car accident scene.
   • Remain calm and cooperate with the other people involved and the authorities.
2. Exchange information with the other driver.
   • Write down the other driver’s contact information including: first and last name, address, telephone number, email address, driver’s license number, license plate number and state.
   • Get the other driver’s auto insurance company name and policy number. Look at the insurance I.D. card carefully and be certain you have the correct name of the insurance company.
   • Write down the year, make, model and description of the vehicle.
   • Write down the names and addresses of all passengers, injured persons or anyone with property damage.
   • Get names and contact information from at least two witnesses if possible.
3. Diagram the scene before leaving.
   • Note time of day, weather and condition of roadway (wet, icy, dry).
   • Show positions of all vehicles involved in the auto accident.
   • Write down the car accident details you feel are important.
   • After taking care of everything at the scene, notify your auto insurance company immediately. Save copies of all paperwork relating to the car accident.

When you are ready to call us to report a claim, be sure to have as much of the following information on hand as possible:

1. Date, time and location of the accident.
2. The current location of your vehicle and whether it is drivable.
3. Information on the other driver, including name, address, phone number and driver license number.
4. Details on the other vehicles involved, including make and model, license plate and VIN.
5. Insurance information from the other involved parties, including the carrier and policy numbers.
6. Contact information for any witnesses and law enforcement agencies that arrived at the scene.
